Is this the most unique place to stay in the Yorkshire Dales?

1–2 minutes

If you’re tired of standard hotels, The Flying Yorkshireman might be exactly what you’re looking for! We spent two nights here to find out whether it lives up to the pictures.

What is The Flying Yorkshireman?

Farmer Emma built this unique place to stay from scratch in under 90 days, using reclaimed railway items throughout. Inside you’ll find: vintage luggage racks, old lamps, railway signs, and the real star of the show for us, traditional train carriage-style seating.

The beautifully crafted carriage sits on a working farm in Nidderdale, with views stretching across the neighbouring fields, the River Nidd, and the old railway line that once ran through the farm’s land. You’ll also have the farm animals as your neighbours – more on them below.

What’s included?

Despite being a train carriage, there’s nothing basic about the space. You’ll get:

  • A comfortable double bed
  • A kitchenette with a hob, oven, fridge and toaster
  • Tea, coffee and breakfast essentials
  • A bathroom with a shower and a toilet
  • A covered platform-style decking area with seating, a wood burner
  • Heating throughout – perfectly cosy in cooler months
  • Games and a record player for entertainment

Tip: the wood burner makes this a brilliant sumer escape – the views over the fields are amazing and make the perfect backdrop for a drink and game of cards.

The location: perfect for exploring the Dales

The carriage is ideally positioned for day trips across the Yorkshire Dales. Within roughly a 20-minute drive, you have:

  • Stump Cross Caverns: impressive show caves well worth a visit
  • Brimham Rocks: bizarre and brilliant natural rock formations
  • Pateley Bridge: a charming market town with independent shops and cafés
  • Grassington: the pretty Dales village used as a filming location for All Creatures Great and Small
  • Ripley: a model estate village with a castle, garden centre and great food

We spent two nights here and still felt like we’d only just scratched the surface. It’s such an ideal base!

The fluffy neighbours

One of the highlights of staying on a working farm is, of course, the animals. Getting to know the residents adds a really wholesome feel to the stay – especially if you’re an animal lover like we are! During our stay, the field in front of the carriage was filled with cows and their calves.

How much does it cost?

We paid £120 per night (for a long weekend), which we felt was really reasonable given how unique the space is. A standard hotel room in the Dales at a similar level would cost roughly the same, so this was a no-brainer booking for us.

Is it worth it?

It absolutely is! The Flying Yorkshireman is its own reason to visit the Dales. Emma’s craftsmanship, the countryside setting, and all the thoughtful touches make it the perfect base. It’s a genuinely great place to stay, and we’d definitely go back.
