Have you walked down the narrowest street in Yorkshire?

2–3 minutes

Tucked away in one of North Yorkshire’s most quaint fishing villages is a street so narrow most people walk straight past it. It’s officially the skinniest in the entire county!

The narrowest street

Dog Loup is a tiny passageway set between two cottages near the seafront. It measures just 18 inches wide at its thinnest point. It’s easy to miss if you’re not actively looking for it, but once you spot the sign, it’s impossible not to try and squeeze through. The cottages feel close enough to collapse on you as you edge your way along – it’s a surprisingly scary few seconds if you dare to walk it.

Where is it?

Dog Loup sits in the heart of Staithes, near the seafront. Walk down Church Street and keep an eye out for the sign – without it, you’d walk past without a second glance

Staithes itself is worth the trip

Dog Loup is a unique excuse to visit, but Staithes more than holds its own as a destination. Colourful cottages are stacked up the cliffs in every direction, working boats bob in the harbour, and the whole village has genuine character that’s increasingly rare on the Yorkshire coast.

We visited during the annual Festival, when many of the cottages open their doors to visitors, and the street fills with art celebrating the area’s heritage. If you can time your visit to coincide with it, it adds a lovely extra dimension to the day.

Is it worth visiting?

Absolutely – and it costs nothing. Dog Loup takes only a few seconds to walk through, but adding it to a visit to Staithes is a must. It’s a unique hidden gem and well worth exploring.
